How Small Can a Selfie Drone Be?

In the background is a marvel of nature, the Tinkerbella nana, also known as the fairy fly. It holds the title for the smallest insect capable of powered flight, with a body length of merely 0.25 millimeters. Inspired by such natural engineering, UAViator’s mission is to launch the smallest wearable selfie drones.

The Market Today

The drone market currently offers mini drones as small as 2 cm in length, and extending to 3.5 cm with an integrated streaming camera. However, these drones’s require complex navigation systems and longer flight capabilities than our specific needs dictate.

Introducing the UAViator Selfie Drone

Our approach simplifies the traditional drone to its essence. The UAViator selfie drone is designed for simplicity and singular focus: to take a quick selfie with a command from your phone. This innovation eliminates the need for heavy batteries, replacing them with capacitors capable of powering the drone for a 10-second flight, which is all it takes to capture your moment. There is no need for manual control; just a simple trigger from your phone to the drone’s dock.

System Overview

    •    Drone: Ultra-compact and powered by a capacitor bank, our drones are equipped with miniature cameras and necessary flight mechanics to launch, hover, and capture an image.

    •    Dock: Serving as both the launching platform and charging station, the lapel pin dock is discreet yet functional, ensuring that your drone is always ready for its next flight.

    •    Phone Interface: Your smartphone acts as the command center, sending signals to the dock to deploy the drone and receive images once captured.

Sustainable Technology

We are committed to environmental responsibility. Our drones are constructed from compostable biopolymers such as chitin or PLA, which not only promise reduced environmental impact but also maintain the lightweight structure necessary for such miniature technology.

Progress

We’ve evolved from prototype designs—ranging from selfie drones integrated into glasses with a solenoid mechanism to sophisticated lapel pins that charge and launch drones with a simple command. Highlights of our journey include:

I’m currently most excited with the prototypes we are making for the dock with Shape Memory Alloy (SMA). SMA has real potential for the dock's latch actuator
